A Case of Filariasis: Swasthya Sawari

According to World Health Organization, Lymphatic filariasis is considered globally a neglected tropical disease. It is a parasitic disease caused by microscopic thread-like worms. It is a vector-borne disease which spreads from one person to another through mosquitoes. The disease can be controlled through regular deworming and protection from mosquito bites. The swelling and deformity caused by it can lead to permanent disability. Along with physical disability the patients suffer mental, social and financial losses contributing to stigma and poverty.

Mr. Deepak Surin

Filariasis in Mr. Deepak’s left leg

We came across a case of filariasis during our Swasthya Sawari medical camp at Pimpi village, located in Kamdara block of Gumla district. 49 years old Deepak Surin had swelling in his left leg for three years. When asked why he did not seek treatment for it, he told that there is no transportation facility in his village. The villagers have to walk about 3-4 Km to get to the transport facility. Since his leg was swollen and he had pain he could not go for treatment. We counselled him and made him understand the health risk if left untreated. He was referred to Kamdara CHC for treatment. After continuous follow-ups, he went for treatment at the CHC and is currently under treatment.
